KRIEGSKAPELLE VALPAROLA,

PASSO DI VALPAROLA  (ITALY)

Located in the Passo di Valparola, W. of Cortina d'Ampezzo.
A strange location that left us with some questions.
The Italian battlefields contain many former War Cemeteries, both Italian and Austro-Hungarian. The remains have been transferred to the ossuaries, but the cemeteries have been maintained. The former cemetery at Valparola is probably such a cemetery. Valparola is an exception in the fact that it still looks as if bodies are still buried there.
A sign on the well maintained entrance asks to respect the site because it's a cemetery.
So is it empty or not?
Also there is one sign that proclaims it to be an Austrian cemetery, but an other talks about a German cemetery.
The Austrian Black Cross doesn't know this 'cemetery'  and the road sign also says it's a Kriegskapelle (War Chapel) and not a Friedhof (Cemetery).
The cemetery used to contain 40 burials, but they have probably been removed.

The Kriegskapelle contains several memorials and original gravemarkers.
